Gurmar (Gymnema Sylvestre) aqueous extracts were able to reduce fasting blood glucose (FBG), cholesterol, and serum triglycerides in alloxan-induced rats. The extract also showed elevation in serum levels of High-density lipids (HDL). Saptrangi (Salacia oblonga) extracts lower acute glycemia (high blood sugar) and insulinemia (high level of insulin in the blood) in persons with type 2 diabetes after a high carbohydrate meal. Karela (Momordica charantia) fruit contains bioactive hypoglycemic agents charantin, polypeptide-p, and vicine. Charantin is composed of a mixture of beta-sitosterol-beta-D-glucoside and 5.25 stigmadien-3-beta-ol glycoside. This peptide resembles Insulin and lowers blood sugar on a temporary basis. Karela can also inhibit glucose uptake by the gut and stimulate glucose uptake by skeletal muscle cells.
