About Hamdard Joshanda Herb Hamdard Joshanda Herb is an Unani herbal medicine in the form of a Joshanda (decoction), also known as Matbuk or Tabikh, which means cooked. Various roots and barks, stems, and flowers are boiled for a specific amount of time to extract their active principles. The ratio is typically 1 teaspoon of dried herb to 1 cup of water. Always use stainless steel, glass, or porcelain vessels to prepare the decoction. Let it cool, and add honey or other flavoring agents if desired. The ratio of herb to water is generally 1:6 or 1:8. Boil the mixture until half or one-third of the water remains. Joshanda has traditionally been used as a home remedy for the common cold, cough, and catarrh, and is also helpful for sore throats. Joshanda is a Persian word derived from joshnidan (boiling) and egg. So Joshanda literally means that which is prepared by boiling. This formulation is prepared like an herbal decoction.
